Section through Reimagined PS64

Abandoned since the 1970s, PS 64 becomes the site for a new school. The Recess School utilizes the shell of the existing structure and weaves subtle interventions to encourage informal interactions throughout the school day.

The main intervention features a a public “hill” intersecting the building and connecting 9th and 10th street. Under the hill holds public programming: a  basketball court and a branch of the NYC Public Library. Above, the top of the hill will bring one to the main lobby of the school and classrooms are located on the upper levels. A large atrium space becomes the playground within the building, encouraging students and teachers to rest, play, and interact with each other throughout the day.
