Role: Architectural Designer at Standard Issue
To mark the historic merger of Herman Miller and Knoll, the MillerKnoll Archives launched with its first exhibition, Manufacturing Modern. Housed in a transformed 12,000 sq ft warehouse on the MillerKnoll campus in Holland, MI, the space showcases hundreds of iconic furniture pieces and objects that reflect the distinct yet intertwined design legacies of both brands.
The archive serves as a permanent home for the brands’ historical collections while also tracing the evolution of modern design. The facility is thoughtfully divided into three key areas: a public exhibition gallery, open archival storage, and a dedicated reading room.
At the heart of the debut exhibition, Manufacturing Modern, are 16 seminal pieces that underscore the spirit of experimentation and innovation shared by both Herman Miller and Knoll. As the architectural designer for this project, I led the layout and spatial planning of the archival storage, assisted in the design the exhibition, and created the scrim that defines the display environment. Throughout the process, I collaborated closely with the MillerKnoll team, including Amy Auscherman, the brand’s lead archivist.
