Study of Coca-Cola Bottling Plans & Systems of Order
Inspiration from Houston’s Urban Grid & Natural Bayous

Houston Currents proposes an art incubator at the former Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Houston, TX. The invervention uses juxtaposing geometry to create new interactions within the existing structures. The reading of the site and its many structural grids lead us to Houston at large: grids created by a system of overlapping and intersecting lines defined by vehicular traffic. Particular to Houston, however, Bayous, intersect the grids, serve as a natural, driving force and bisect this copious system of lines.

Study of Organic “Ribbon” Bisecting Existing Site

This understanding led to the concept of a “ribbon,” defined by two walls, which houses the art incubator and bounds large gallery space. The ribbon weaves through the site’s grids, fostering circulation, creative production, and diverse spatial qualities, giving new life to the historic building.
